What Do Your Dash Warning Lights Really Mean?

Modern vehicles are smarter than ever, constantly monitoring their own systems and alerting you when something’s not quite right. But when a mysterious light appears on your dashboard, it can be confusing — and easy to ignore. At Maitland Auto Electrical, we’re here to help you understand what those warning lights mean and why it’s important not to delay getting them checked.

Common Dash Warning Lights You Shouldn’t Ignore

  1. Check Engine Light
This little engine-shaped icon can mean anything from a loose fuel cap to serious engine trouble. If it’s flashing, seek immediate help.
  2. Battery Warning Light
Looks like a car battery. If this light comes on, your charging system isn’t working properly — often caused by alternator or battery issues.
  3. Oil Pressure Warning
An oil can symbol means your engine oil pressure is low. Stop driving immediately to avoid engine damage and get professional help.
  4. Brake System Warning Light
Usually a circle with an exclamation mark or the word "BRAKE." This may indicate low brake fluid, worn brake pads, or another critical brake issue.
  5. Coolant Temperature Warning
A thermometer icon signals your engine is overheating. Stop safely, let the engine cool, and have the cooling system inspected.
  6. Airbag Warning Light
If this stays lit, your airbag system may not deploy in a crash. Always have this checked urgently for your safety.

What Should You Do When a Warning Light Appears?

  • Don’t ignore it. Even if the vehicle seems to drive normally, warning lights mean something needs attention.
  • Note the colour:
  • Red lights: Serious issues needing immediate attention.
  • Amber/orange lights: Less urgent, but still require professional checking soon.
  • Green/blue lights: Information only (e.g., headlights on).

At our Telarah workshop, our expert technicians use advanced diagnostic scan tools to pinpoint faults quickly and accurately. Whether it’s a minor glitch or a serious fault, we can diagnose and repair the issue before it leads to bigger problems.
